My First attempt at Breastfeeding
I am a mom of three sweet girls. Three times I have had the opportunity to nurse. With my first daughter I nursed her for a month. For a month she cried all. the. time. I would nurse her for 30 minutes and 30 minutes later she was ready to nurse again. She cut me up something fierce. I am honestly surprised that those wounds healed. It was really bad. After a month I broke down one day and bought a bottle and formula. When I gave it to her her little eyed rolled back in her head, she had not known what it was to have a full tummy. We went to see a lactation consultant who did a weighted feed and I was not producing anything! My poor sweet girl was starving.
Defeated before I started
When my second daughter was born I really wanted to get it right this time. I tried again but after a few days I got mastitis and we went in for a weighted feed. Again my body was not producing milk for my baby girl. I switched her to formula, which worked for us especially because I had to go back to work when she was only two weeks old.
Third times the charm
Baby girl number three came along and I was sure that I would not be able to nurse her. I tried anyway. She latched on great but by the end of day two the doctor suggested that I supplement, which I did. I continued to nurse though. The next morning at discharge the sweet delivery nurse suggested some supplements to help increase my supply. Those helped a little but in order for nursing to be successful for me I had to use everything in this post, I hope this information helps you to breastfeed with ease.
This little milk saver is a God send to breastfeeding Mommies. As Mommy is nursing the baby this is attached to catch milk on the opposite side. This catches the milk that would otherwise just leak while nursing. For Mom’s who struggle with supply this is an amazing product!
Large Water Bottle
The best way to increase milk supply is to increase water intake. This bottle is fantastic because not only is it large but it also has a built in filter. I love having a water bottle that goes wherever I do, it is amazing how thirsty breastfeeding makes you!
Make sure Mom is getting enough water with this extra large water bottle with filter
These are great for two reasons, they help to increase your milk supply and they help to calm the hunger. The thing that surprised me the most about breast feeding is how incredibly hungry it makes you. Like soooooo hungry. For real for real! You will want to keep other snacks with you as well as you want to keep your calories up while nursing but these cookies are a great addition to the snack list!
These yummy cookies help get the milk flowing!
Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle
These are supplement that for SOME women help to increase milk supply. There are a few ways to take it. The Milk Flow powder mixes with water. I really liked this to give the large amount of water some occasional flavor. It comes in a variety of flavors, I really liked the berry. Honest Company has pills that are taken once a day. They worked better for me than other pills I tried and I liked that they only needed to be taken once a day. The Pink Stork tea is very popular, I have not tried it but have heard great things about it.
Post Natal Vitamins
I am not normally a vitamin person and honestly it would not have occurred to me to continue to take vitamins after my sweet girl was born. But nursing can deplete your body of vitamins and as you still have a baby that you are providing all of it’s nutrients to its important to keep the vitamins going. Being a Mom is so much work and with a new little person that needs everything from you it is crucial to keep yourself at optimum health, make sure to get your vitamins in!
There are a couple of reasons that I prefer a nursing tank instead of a nursing bra, especially in the beginning. First of all exhaustion is a real thing in the early days and when desperate a tank can totally pass for a shirt. Second there is an adjustment that you go through trying to balance modesty and the real task of nurturing your child on a very frequent basis. Tanks are great for maintaining a certain amount of modesty while feeding. Also, when out in public you can use the two shirt method instead of an actual cover up. The tank keeps your tummy covered up while you nurse.
Aden + Anais Muslin Wraps
I absolutely love these wraps! They come in great patterns, are the perfect size and are so soft. I use them for as a cover up, to swaddle and as a burp cloth. I love a produce that serves so many purposes!
For real, for real oatmeal is a breastfeeding mommies best friend. Make sure that it is real oatmeal, not instant, and it will help to increase your supply. Plus its such a great way to start the morning, with nutritious food. I have even had it with cinnamon and honey for a late night snack to get rid of the evening hunger pains 🙂
This was hands down the best thing I did for myself as a new nursing mommy. I made myself a nursing basket. It carried everything listed above plus some easy to eat snacks. When you are nursing a new baby you are basically stuck to a seat for at least 30 minutes, longer if your sweet one falls asleep and you don’t want to disturb the peace. I also suggest keeping a book or phone charger available as well. Handles are so important as you want to be able to easily carry it wherever you are going to nurse. I liked to go up to my bedroom to nurse if my other children had a friend over and this made it so I always had what I needed on hand.
I really hope that this helps you to be successful at nursing. Please share with me anything that you found to be essential to a positive nursing experience
